A TRIBUTE TO

NASEEB MFINANGA

Nasikia Camps and Maasai Wanderings in Tanzania is a legacy of love, vision and authenticity. A living memorial to Naseeb Mfinanga who, together with his wife, Donna Duggan, had a dream…

Tragedy struck when Nas, affectionately known as Simba, was one of 11 people who lost their lives on 15 November 2017, when a Cessna aircraft crashed above the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in northern Tanzania.

At the time Nas was finalising the plans for the Ehlane Plains Camp and it opened on time shortly after Nas’s death. It was as though his legacy constructed a fortress of goodwill around Donna and it’s clear that she is surrounded by a network of people who remain unflinchingly at her side. The rapidly expanding portfolio of properties in Nasikia Camps, including Ehlane Plains, is a magnificent memorial to Nas who persevered to find the ideal places to ‘see’ and ‘hear’ the bush.

Nas and Donna, an Australian nursing sister, met while she was doing voluntary work in Tanzania. The attraction was instant. So was their idea of starting a feasible business together.

Nas and Donna soon became a couple, bound by a profound compatibility that easily lent itself to a business partnership. Despite it being inter-faith and cross cultural, the union was solid, built on shared dreams and passions and their love for each other.

The rest is a tale of two charismatic entrepreneurs. In 2005, they founded Maasai Wanderings with a single, beat-up old Land Rover (they called it The Buffalo). They soon expanded into Nasikia Camps and judging by the seven properties they now have, Nas was a visionary – building what dreamers can only imagine.

The success of their business is partly due to their mission to encompass not only authentic and luxurious wildlife experiences but also creating job opportunities for locals. Around 200 Tanzanians are employed – at the camps as well as in Arusha, where the tents are manufactured alongside an engineering, carpentry and design workshop. Nas always wanted to empower people teaching them multiple skills.

Nas was the connector, quietly confident with a relentless optimism. He was also a natural when it came to developing business relationships. This complemented Donna’s spirit and administrative skills. She made sure the books balanced, the emails were answered and that the business ran like a well-oiled machine. It was this ‘can-do’ attitude that also had Donna speaking fluent Swahili in no time.

Even though she lost her soulmate and has to raise two children, aged six and twelve, alone, giving up was never an option. ‘There is a word in Swahili, kupambana, which means ‘to keep struggling, hustling’… with the goal of moving forward to be where you need to be,’ she explains. ‘I have people relying on me who need jobs and, more importantly, through the establishment of the Naseeb Mfinanga Memorial Trust I will ensure my husband’s legacy continues, that his spirit lives on. I know he would never want me to give up the fight to reach our goals.’

As the Circle of Life continues, the Wildebeest migrate across the Serengeti plains, the predators close on their heels, and the African sun rises and sets on Nasikia’s camps. Nas remains in the hearts and souls of not only his family but everyone whose lives he touched.
